A Message from Eda

Standing at approximately 5 ft 5.5 inches in my undergraduate years at the University of British Columbia I soon realized my quiet demeanor was not as intimidating as I would have liked to believe. I found myself paranoid as I walked to the bus loop or to my car at night, jumping at the slightest noise, and feeling helpless particularly when confronted by aggressive panhandlers or inebriated men. I feared the unknown and despised my trepidation. I convinced myself that I was a magnet for creepy people and began to assume that uncomfortable confrontations were simply inevitable.

Then, in early February of 2005, my 10 year old brother brought home a notice advertising Fullpower. I figured it was time for me to get proactive and forced my mother to tag along.

I firmly believe that after four hours of listening, talking, and recognizing the potential I held within myself, I walked out of that workshop as a new woman. Observing the way that the workshop participants responded to the positive and supportive environment created by the instructor left me inspired and essentially speechless. The best way I can describe the change I experienced that day is that I felt empowered.  I realized I wanted to help others to feel the same way. Although I realize now that sometimes finding myself in uncomfortable or difficult situations is unavoidable, I am convinced that my new arsenal of simple techniques will allow me to avoid or calmly de-escalate most situations, and gracefully exit others. This is what fuels my passion for KIDPOWER/TEENPOWER/FULLPOWER International.

Because I wanted to help others experience this same sense of empowerment, I began volunteering for Kidpower Vancouver. Recently, I boarded a plane to Santa Cruz California for a fun filled week of Instructor Training. Within a day my instructors had already thrown me into a class FULL of kindergartners. Ironically, although I was officially the teacher, my little friends taught me more than I could have ever have imagined. They inspired me with their perseverance and motivated me with their knowledge. Now, as a certified Kidpower Coach I look forward to returning the favor.

I truly believe in this program and I am proud to be a part of this organization.

Sincerely,

Eda Karacabeyli
