Q: Is spending several years learning a martial art a good way to learn self defense?

Martial arts are great. They improve self discipline, confidence, self esteem, respect for others, flexibility, coordination, balance, fitness, strength, and speed. And they can improve your ability to defend yourself as a result. But this is in most cases a side benefit, because most martial arts are not primarily focused on self defense. Perhaps more importantly, most traditional martial arts do not teach anything about avoidance of confrontations, which is the most important part of personal safety and self defense.

Even if a particular style or school considers that their primary focus is on self defense you need to take an objective look at what they are actually teaching. Experience has shown that traditional martial arts may be of limited value in a modern self defense situation. So a better question might be “Is spending several years learning a martial art necessary to learn self defense?” For some time now the consensus in the self defense literature has been that the short answer to this question is “no”.
