Types of Workshops

Everyday Safety Skills for Children 4 years and older

These are one to two hour workshops designed to teach children essential safety skills. Topics covered can include safety with strangers, maintaining a safe distance, boundary setting, dealing with bullying and insults, inappropriate touching and getting help from adults. The material covered is similar to what is covered in a full workshop, minus the Full Force Self Defense Skills.

KIDPOWER Parent/Child Workshops

Fun, age-appropriate four hour workshops give families a common language and set of experiences to continue practicing Everyday Safety Skills together.

Workshops for 6 to 8 year olds with their parents or caregivers answer the question, “How can we teach our children to be safe without scaring them?”  Workshops for 9 to 12 year olds also provide a foundation for balancing children’s drive for increasing independence with the need to stay safe. We also offer workshops for ages 6 to 12 in one group covering all of the above material.

In addition, these workshops provide the opportunity for the children to learn and practice Full Force Self Defense Skills on a head-to-toe padded instructor. Adults may choose to rehearse the skills in class as their children learn them, but do not work with the padded instructor.

School & Club Workshops

Young people learn Everyday Safety Skills in the context of their school or youth group accompanied by teachers, group leaders, or parent volunteers. The workshops can be expanded to include Full Force Self Defense Skills.

Sessions for the Workplace

One hour information sessions at lunch or any time during the day at your workplace provide an opportunity for employees to learn about personal safety on and off the job. Sessions are informal and are designed provide general information about personal safety and to address the specific concerns of the group.

Information Sessions for Parents, Caregivers and Professionals

KIDPOWER recognizes that parents, caregivers, and professionals may need lots of information about our programs before they will feel comfortable enrolling their child in a workshop. Our Parent/Caregiver Information Sessions provide adults with information about the importance of teaching self protection skills to children, the philosophy, style and content of KIDPOWER workshops, and a demonstration of Full Force Self Defense Skills.

TEENPOWER

TEENPOWER programs emphasize boundary setting; show how to handle sexual harassment, date rape and physical threats; increase self-confidence and the ability to prevent violent interactions; and teach verbal, mental, and physical skills. Teens acquire all the skills provided by KIDPOWER workshops, including Full Force Self Defense Skills. Unlike KIDPOWER, TEENPOWER introduces “Verbal Attack Scenarios” in which participants learn how to deal effectively with an aggressive verbal attack in a way that prevents the situation from escalating to a physical confrontation. Workshops usually last four hours.

FULLPOWER

FULLPOWER provides comprehensive training in a four hour workshop for all adults, regardless of age or athletic ability, who want to gain confidence in their ability and right to defend their physical and emotional integrity. The content of the workshop is essentially that included in TEENPOWER, without the emphasis on teen specific issues. Single gender and mixed gender workshops can be arranged. Additional topics include domestic violence, abduction, sexual assault, home intrusion, and threats with weapons. Verbal Attack Scenarios tend to be more intense than those in TEENPOWER workshops.

TEENPOWER/FULLPOWER

Mixed TEENPOWER/FULLPOWER workshops can be very effective, especially for moms and daughters. These four hour workshops provide the opportunity for parents and teens to have candid discussion about peer pressure, date rape, abduction and other personal safety issues. Learning Full Force Self Defense Skills together can be an empowering experience that helps to bond parents and teens around these issues.

SENIORPOWER

SENIORPOWER recognizes that as people get older, they often experience physical and emotional changes. Participants have an opportunity to apply their strengths in a context that is safe, success-based, and relevant to their current life situations. The skills learned in these four hour workshops are similar to those offered in FULLPOWER workshops with adaptations to the special needs and abilities of seniors.

ADAPTED PROGRAMS

Our ADAPTED PROGRAMS serve people facing special life challenges that make them more vulnerable, such as having physical disabilities, developmental challenges, being survivors of assault or abuse, living or working in higher risk neighborhoods, having chronic mental illness, being targets of hate crimes, etc.

ADVANCED PROGRAMS

Sometimes graduates of our programs want a chance to learn more. ADVANCED PROGRAMS allow graduates to return for another workshop and a chance to practice skills already learned. In addition participants acquire more advanced Full Force Self Defense Skills. Emphasis is placed on escaping from various attack scenarios, including home intrusions, chokes, grabs, and fighting from the ground when it is unavoidable. We also provide training in how to deal with attacks involving weapons such as knives and guns. Defensive strategies and simple, effective disarms are taught for situations in which escape is otherwise not possible.
